Recognizing Excellence in Waste Management

Eastern Regional Service Board Receives Award for Innovative Technology

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, is congratulating the Eastern Regional Service Board for winning the Solid Waste Association of North America’s (SWANA) Silver Excellence Award. The board won the award in the Transfer Station category for its Clarenville Transfer Station entry.

“I commend the Eastern Regional Service Board on their work in Clarenville to reduce operating costs and emissions into the environment. This advanced technology in waste disposal demonstrates how Newfoundland and Labrador is leading the way in innovation. The Provincial Government is committed to waste reduction through the multi-year Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy, and this technology will help achieve our long-term goal of limiting waste in landfills.”
- The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs

The Clarenville Transfer Station is funded through the Department of Municipal Affairs, which led the design and construction process for the project. The transfer station officially opened in January and is designed to accommodate about 10,500 tonnes of waste. The station has the capacity to store one full day’s worth of collected municipal solid waste, and it enables municipal, commercial, and waste-haulers to safely drop off municipal garbage, paper recyclables and container recyclables.

“In the past, whenever we had problems or issues to tackle, we would look outside the province for best practices and best in class technology. Now things have changed and people outside Newfoundland and Labrador are seeking our advice as to how to address problems. The Clarenville Transfer Station is a prime example of innovation and bringing unique solutions to manage waste in the region.”
- Ed Grant, Chairperson, Eastern Regional Service Board

The Solid Waste Association of North America Excellence Awards program recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management.

Members of the Eastern Regional Service Board will receive the award at the Solid Waste Association of North America’s annual conference, WASTECON, in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 23.
