Supporting Community Infrastructure

Over $8.3 Million Available for Municipal Capital Works Projects

The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, today announced over $8.3 million worth of cost-shared projects approved through the Provincial Government's 2016-17 Municipal Capital Works program.

"These investments are an example of our government's commitment to enabling municipalities to deliver strong municipal services and meet infrastructure needs. This funding will support 21 municipal infrastructure projects, including fire hall and town hall designs and construction, drinking water system improvements and road paving."
- The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs

Recent changes to the federal Small Communities Fund, and $70.6 million in new investments anticipated through the federal Clean Water and Wastewater Fund, mean the Provincial Government is in a position to fund more infrastructure projects, in more communities, through its own Municipal Capital Works program.

Today's announcement was made in the Town of Mount Moriah, which has received approval for a new fire hall/emergency centre, valued at over $1.5 million.

"This is a great day for the town. This council and the previous council have been working very hard to bring this project to fruition. The new fire hall and emergency centre will be situated in a safer, more convenient location - and I hope this project will mark the beginning of further revitalization efforts in our community."
- Joe Park, Mayor of Mount Moriah

The $8.3 million worth of projects is being cost-shared by the Provincial Government and the recipient communities. A complete list of approved projects can be viewed in the backgrounder below.

Over the next four years, the Provincial Government is investing approximately $344 million in municipal infrastructure projects, which is expected to leverage over $146 million in federal funding.
