Public Advisory: Provincial Government Encourages all Residents to Be Prepared
This week, May 1-7, is Emergency Preparedness Week and in light of recent events in Alberta, the Provincial Government encourages all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to be prepared in case of an emergency.
Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador encourages residents to take actions to be better prepared in case of emergency. Experience has shown that individual preparedness goes a long way to help people cope better - both during and after a major disaster. For more information and resources, please visit www.getprepared.ca . By taking a few simple steps, you can become better prepared to face a range of emergencies.
- Know the risks - Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help you better prepare.
- Make a plan - It will help you and your family know what to do.
- Get an emergency kit - During an emergency, we all need some basic supplies. We may need to get by without power or tap water. Be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours in an emergency.
Another valuable resource is the Inclusive Emergency Planning Guide developed by the Coalition for Persons with Disabilities. The guide and prep kit are available online, in print and alternate formats upon request. Individuals wishing to attain copies are encouraged to contact 709-722-7011 or email info@codnl.ca.
The Provincial Government wishes to thank all emergency first responders, volunteers and others involved in emergency situations for the important work they do. The sacrifices they often make in these efforts does not go unnoticed.
