New Waste Transfer Station Opens in Clarenville
Today, with the official opening of a new waste transfer station in Clarenville, the Provincial Government is moving closer to its Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy goals of reducing the amount of waste and number of waste sites in Newfoundland and Labrador.
“The new waste transfer station in Clarenville will immediately provide a user-friendly facility for approximately 10,000 residents in the region. When the operation is expanded to include the Discovery Region in 2017, it will serve approximately 20,000 people and it is anticipated that nine landfill sites will close.”
- The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs
The Provincial Government provided $4.2 million for the construction of the Clarenville waste transfer station and its associated equipment. The waste transfer station enables municipal, commercial, and waste-haulers to safely drop off municipal garbage, paper recyclables and container recyclables. It also has an area for the drop-off and temporary storage of bulky items including metals, wood, tires, recyclable construction and demolition debris.
“The new Clarenville waste transfer station provides municipalities and residents in the region with a more environmentally-friendly way of disposing of waste. This new facility assists us in advancing the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy.”
- Colin Holloway, MHA for Terra Nova
The transfer station is designed to accommodate approximately 10,500 tonnes of waste and has the capacity to store one full day’s worth of collected municipal solid waste. The site includes leachate collection and fire protection systems that meet all municipal, provincial and federal requirements.
“Today marks the beginning of a new era of modern and environmentally friendly waste management for this region. On behalf of the Eastern Regional Services Board, I thank the Provincial Government for working with us on the development and construction of this facility.”
- Ed Grant, Chair, Eastern Regional Service Board
The Provincial Government plans to complete the province-wide network of transfer stations and waste recovery facilities by 2020 and to develop full-scale organic waste management by 2025.
