Investigation Underway Into Discharging of Firearm Near School in Central Newfoundland

Following a complaint from a concerned member of the public, charges are pending against an adult male for allegedly breaching regulations of the Wildlife Act which involve discharging a firearm near a school in the community of Campbellton.

On October 21, 2016 a member of the public reported a moose being shot and killed in Campbellton, Notre Dame Bay. Officers immediately responded to the report and following a preliminary investigation determined that a calf female moose had been shot and killed within 300 meters of nearby homes and within 1000 meters of Greenwood Academy.

With the assistance of the public, officers were able to determine the individual alleged to be responsible. As a result, four quarters of moose were seized and an adult male will appear in provincial court in Gander at a later date for violating sections of regulations under the Wildlife Act, including discharging a firearm within 1000 meters of a school.

Hunting with a firearm carries with it a great responsibility and hunters are reminded to adhere to all wildlife regulations. Anyone handling or discharging a firearm in an unsafe manner without consideration for the safety of themselves or others will face prosecution, possible fines and prohibition from hunting for up to five years.
