Investigations into Illegal Fishing Activities Lead to Multiple Convictions

Investigations conducted by the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division of the Department of Justice and Public Safety have resulted in multiple convictions at Provincial Court in Gander.

Raymond Nippard of Victoria Cove, Gander Bay, was convicted and fined $500 for angling with bait and a spinner which is illegal on a scheduled salmon river. Angling on a scheduled river is permitted using an artificial fly only. Mr. Nippard was apprehended by fish and wildlife enforcement officers on June 21.

Alexander Snow of Campbellton was convicted and fined $500 for angling in inland waters in a closed area. He was also convicted for possession of ammunition without a valid permit and was fined $100. In addition, 31 rounds of rifle ammunition and a shotgun ammunition shell were forfeited to the Crown. The convictions are the result of an investigation by fish and wildlife enforcement officers in May on the Campbellton River which is a scheduled salmon river.

Kimberly Powell of Glovertown was convicted of angling in a closed area and was fined $250. She was observed by fish and wildlife enforcement officers fishing in Square Pond near Gambo. The season for angling for trout in inland waters was closed at that time.

Shain Anstey of Norris Arm North was convicted of netting in inland waters and possession of salmon and was fined a total of $3,000 for both offences. The conviction is the result of an investigation by fish and wildlife enforcement officers while conducting a coastal patrol near the community of Norris Arm North. In addition to the fines, Mr. Anstey is ordered not to fish or possess any recreational fishing licence for three years and is prohibited from being on or near inland waters for three years, with the exception of visiting his cabin by road. He is also allowed to travel by water until December 31 to access his moose hunting area.
