Flags Lowered to Half-Mast at the Confederation Building

The Canadian, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Union Jack flags have been lowered to half-mast at the Confederation Building in St. John’s to mark the tragic event in Nice, France. The flags will fly at half-mast until sunset on Monday, July 18, which is consistent with national protocols.

“The House of Assembly expresses its heartfelt sympathies to the people of France and the families who lost loved ones in last night’s tragic event in Nice. Out of respect, we have decided to lower the flags in front of the provincial legislature.”
- The Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly

When official flags are lowered to half-mast at the Confederation Building, protocol dictates any other flag being flown on provincial buildings as a courtesy is taken down. Therefore, the Pride Flag, which is currently flying on the ceremonial flag pole on the grounds of the Confederation Building will be taken down at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon (Friday, July 15).

“St. John’s Pride is aware the Pride Flag presently flying at the Confederation Building is being lowered to honour and acknowledge those lost in Nice, France. We would like to express our gratitude to the Provincial Government for advising us of this in advance. We send our condolences to the friends and families of those that were lost in this tragedy.”
- Tj Jones, Co-Chair Internal, St. John’s Pride Inc.

The Canadian Flag at the Peace Tower has been lowered to half-mast and will remain lowered during France’s period of mourning. The flag will remain lowered until sunrise on Monday, July 18.
