Appointment of Acting Chief Electoral Officer and Acting Commissioner for Legislative Standards

The Honourable Tom Osborne, Speaker of the House of Assembly, announced the appointment of Mr. Bruce Chaulk, effective May 31, 2016, as the Acting Chief Electoral Officer and Acting Commissioner for Legislative Standards until such time as the positions are permanently filled in accordance with the legislation. Mr. Chaulk has served as the Assistant Chief Electoral Officer and Director of Election Finance since 2011.

The positions of Chief Electoral Officer and Commissioner for Legislative Standards were vacant as a result of the retirement of Mr. Victor Powers, on May 26, 2016. The Speaker congratulates Mr. Powers on his retirement and commends him for his years of service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

The position of Chief Electoral Officer is established under the Elections Act, 1991 and the Commissioner of Legislative Standards is established under the House of Assembly Act. The Chief Electoral Officer and the Commissioner for Legislative Standards are scheduled to the recently proclaimed Independent Appointments Commission Act.
