Provincial Government Reaches Agreement with PAIRN

Today, the Provincial Government announced a collective agreement has been reached with the Professional Association of Interns and Residents (PAIRN). This agreement follows over two years of bargaining and is being honoured in good faith.

"Having resident salaries which are comparable to those in other Atlantic provinces will encourage medical students to consider post graduate training in Newfoundland and Labrador. Research has shown that residents who complete Undergraduate Medical Education in this province are much more likely to decide to practice in Newfoundland and Labrador. This is important in order to provide care to our population."
- The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services

PAIRN has been without a contract since 2013 and have been bargaining with government since 2014. This agreement, reached in March 2016, will see salaries adjusted to achieve parity with PARI-MP (Nova Scotia) during the last two years of the collective agreement. Parity is determined by salary comparisons that were completed as of July 1, 2014.

"Our government made a commitment prior to Budget 2016 to PAIRN and that is being honoured in light of fairness and good faith. The approximately 260 residents and fellows who work in our regional healthcare authorities as part of their academic program are integral pieces of our healthcare system."
- Minister Haggie

The adjustments will equal $1.3 million over the life of the contract which has been included in the Department of Health and Community Services departmental budgets.
