Increasing Awareness for Health and Well-Being

Provincial Government Recognizes National Nursing Week in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Provincial Government is recognizing May 8 to 15 as National Nursing Week in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"During National Nursing Week, and indeed all year long, I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to recognize the tireless efforts of nurses and their dedication to patients and families throughout our province."
- The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services

The theme for National Nursing Week 2016 is Nurses: With You Every Step of the Way. This theme speaks to the broad scope of valuable health services nurses provide.

"Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients in the health care system. As a government we are maintaining a focus on primary health care reform to improve health outcomes by increasing access to care. A key part of this plan is having qualified nurses using all their skills in community-based interdisciplinary teams, working with family physicians, and many other health professionals to support patients."
- Minister Haggie

Nurses serve in a variety of settings throughout the province, from long-term care facilities and hospitals to frontline health services in schools and clinics. They also play an important role in post-secondary education, administration, research and policy.
