Strengthening Mental Health Services for Families and Communities

New Adult Addictions Treatment Centre Opens in Harbour Grace

A new treatment centre for adults dealing with complex alcohol and drug addiction issues was officially opened this morning in Harbour Grace. The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, was joined by officials with Eastern Health, community stakeholders and Pam Parsons, MHA for the District of Harbour Grace - Port de Grave, to open the Grace Centre. The Grace Centre will offer a holistic approach to treatment for people who are 18 years of age and older.

“As a government, we have committed to take action to improve the health and well-being of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. The Grace Centre will have a very real and positive impact on the lives of many families throughout our province. By taking a holistic approach to treatment in a residential environment, our health care professionals will help people reduce their risk of relapse and achieve a healthy, balanced lifestyle.”
- The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services

The 18-bed facility will offer medical, educational and therapeutic services in a safe and home-like environment for people who require more intensive levels of support. The modern facility includes a full-size gymnasium and fitness area, music and art therapy rooms, a lounge and entertainment space, and other amenities to create a positive and comfortable healing environment. The centre will complement other existing addictions treatment service centres throughout the province, including Humberwood in Corner Brook.

“Today, Eastern Health is pleased to join with our government and community partners for the official opening of the Grace Centre. The centre will complement the continuum of existing addictions services throughout the province, enabling Eastern Health to provide more specialized care and support for individuals with complex addictions issues, while also providing supports for their families.”
- David Diamond, President and CEO, Eastern Health

Clients from across the province will begin to be admitted to the program near the end of February. The average length of stay will be 28 days with extended stays as required.

“I am proud to join my colleagues and members of the community today to officially open this wonderful new facility. The Grace Centre will help individuals and families from all regions throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, providing quality care and hope when they need it most.”
- Pam Parsons, MHA for the District of Harbour Grace - Port de Grave

A consultative process was initiated by Eastern Health to determine the official name of the centre. Notices were placed in local papers and invitations were circulated to a wide range of community partners. A committee comprising both internal and external stakeholders reviewed all submissions and voted to determine the name.

The Provincial Government remains committed to improving health care infrastructure to ensure effective and efficient delivery of quality care. Building on the opening of the Grace Centre, the construction of a new mental health facility to replace the Waterford Hospital remains a priority and will proceed without delay.
