Provincial Government Recognizes Eating Disorder Awareness Week

The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services, joined members of the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador today for a flag-raising ceremony to recognize February 1-7 as Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

We know that early detection of eating disorders is crucial for effective treatment and recovery. Promoting education and awareness is one of the most effective ways to encourage early detection and build self-esteem and we praise the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador for its advocacy on behalf of individuals and families across the province.
- The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services

The provincial theme for 2016 is Eating Disorders Are as Diverse as the People They Affect, calling attention to the wide spectrum of eating disorders and the diversity of people who can be affected.

The Provincial Government continues to work with the Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador to establish an adult inpatient unit for the treatment of eating disorders.

At the Eating Disorder Foundation, we continue to see residents of this province every day who are in need of treatment and support for a number of complex eating disorders. We will continue to work with the Provincial Government on the delivery of programs and services to support these individuals. We strive to promote healthy body images through public education and awareness.
- Paul Thomey, Executive Director, Eating Disorder Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador
