Phoenix Academy Student Wins Provincial Poster Contest for National Forest Week

Braeden Mouland, a Grade 5 student at Phoenix Academy, Carmanville, is the provincial winner of the 2016 National Forest Week Poster contest organized by the Forest Service Branch of the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods. His winning artwork was selected from 285 entries received from 20 schools.

"The annual poster contest is a fun way for students to demonstrate their knowledge and interpretation of how the forest resource is utilized. I congratulate all the students who participated this year and I thank the teachers and schools for bringing the contest into their classrooms and teaching students about that role the forestry plays in our province."
- The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

Derrick Bragg, MHA for Fogo Island - Cape Freels presented the provincial winner with his prize, an Ipad Mini and case, and a Smokey Bear gift pack. Phoenix Academy received a library book gift pack valued at $500 and a framed copy of the winning entry.

Second place winner Jadyn Bragg, a student at Cape St. Francis Elementary in Pouch Cove, and Eva Parr, third place winner and a student at Pasadena Elementary, will each receive an Ipod Nano and Smokey Bear gift pack.

"Congratulations to students and teachers for participating in this year's National Forest Week Poster Contest. It is wonderful to see so many of our schools involved in this initiative that provides students with the opportunity to explore their creativity while learning about the importance of forest resources."
- The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

National Forest Week is an annual event held in September to encourage Canadians to learn more about the forest sector and to raise awareness about this valuable and renewable resource.

The theme for this year's event, True North Strong and Green - Celebrating Canada's Forests, recognized Canada as a world leader in resource stewardship and innovation. Students participating in the poster contest were asked to reflect the theme in their entry.
