Public Advisory: Wolf Sightings in Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Residents are advised to be aware following reports of wolves on the back trails of the Department of National Defence Base (Canadian side), near the entrance to the Loppet Trail in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, after a dog was attacked Wednesday evening.

Conservation officers are patrolling the area. Officers did not see the wolves this morning however they are asking residents to be vigilant.

Wolves have been known to occasionally attack small to medium-sized pets. Pet owners, especially those living adjacent to wooded areas, are advised to protect their animals by:

  • Keeping them indoors or in confined areas such as a fenced yard;
  • Limiting the amount of time pets spend outside, especially after dark; and
  • Supervising pets at all times while outside.

Conservation officers will continue to monitor the situation.

Should you encounter a wolf:

  • Stay calm;
  • Give the animal space;
  • Back away slowly - never run; and
  • Avoid direct eye contact with the animal.

Anyone sighting a wolf should contact the 24-hour emergency line at 709-897-7116.
