Celebrating a Strong, Green Forest Resource

Province's Grade 5 Students Invited to Participate in Annual Contest

National Forest Week begins September 18-24 and all Canadians are encouraged to learn more about the forest sector and to raise awareness about this valuable and renewable resource. To celebrate National Forest Week, the Forest Service of the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods is sponsoring its annual National Forest Week Poster Contest for Grade 5 students.

"In previous years, the judges have been impressed with the imagination and the scope of understanding the students use in their artwork and this year is expected to produce the same outstanding quality. I applaud our teachers and educators for bringing this initiative into their classrooms again this year and I encourage all Grade 5 students to participate. I look forward to seeing the submissions."
- The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

Traditionally held in May, the contest was moved to September to coincide with other National Forest Week activities. Information on the contest can be found in the Backgrounder below and by visiting www.faa.gov.nl.ca/forestry/nfw/nfw_contest.html

To encourage educators and students outside Grade 5 to get involved in National Forest Week an activity guide has been developed to help educators plan activities throughout the week. An electronic version can be downloaded at: www.faa.gov.nl.ca/forestry/nfw/pdf/activity_guide.pdf PDF Icon

This year's theme, True North Strong and Green - Celebrating Canada's Forests, recognizes Canada as a world leader in resource stewardship and innovation. For information on National Forest Week, please visit: www.faa.gov.nl.ca/forestry/nfw
