Engaging Youth in Marine Studies

Students on Ice Creates Valuable Learning Opportunity

Blake Russell, a Grade 11 student from Lewisporte, spent his summer learning about Arctic ecosystems through the Students on Ice program. The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods provided an $11,900 scholarship for him to join the 2016 Arctic Youth Expedition.

"Education and awareness are key to the conservation and protection of our marine environment. This scholarship offers students an amazing hands-on learning experience. It is an opportunity for young people to learn about our northern ocean ecosystems and the important role they play in our culture, economy and global well-being."
- The Honourable Steve Crocker, Minister of Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

A diverse group of 116 students and 80 educators participated in this year's expedition, learning more about the challenges facing the circumpolar world. Throughout the trip, students were encouraged to expand their knowledge to gain new perspectives and become polar ambassadors.

"This trip has changed my life in a very positive way. I now have an overview of issues that are happening in the Arctic and learned about the culture of Inuit people, for whom I have developed a great deal of respect. I hope to use my newly gained knowledge to make a difference in my community and make the world a better place."
- Blake Russell, Students on Ice Participant

The Students on Ice program promotes polar education, conservation, science, environmental issues and general knowledge about the polar regions across Canada and around the world. Its goal is to encourage students to gain a new understanding and respect for the environment.
