Supporting Strong Municipalities

Provincial Government Announces Infrastructure Funding for Deer Lake

The Provincial Government and the Government of Canada are making infrastructure investments that will help create jobs, grow the middle class, and support a high standard of living for Canadians and their families for years to come.

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, joined Gudie Hutchings, Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs, to announce more than $2.7 million in combined funding for critical water and storm infrastructure upgrades in Deer Lake.

"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to providing residents with modern infrastructure that supports growth and development in their communities, and ensures their personal well-being. Our government is pleased to partner with the Federal Government and the Town of Deer Lake to make these significant upgrades to the town's water and storm infrastructure, and we look forward to seeing citizens benefit from these enhancements for years to come."
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Work involves replacing asbestos pipes with new sanitary and storm collection, and water distribution lines along 1.5 kilometres of First, Second and Third Streets.

"The Government of Canada recognizes that modern, efficient water infrastructure is essential to preserving public health, protecting the environment and reducing municipal maintenance costs. We are working in close partnership with Newfoundland and Labrador to make sure they have the support they need to build sustainable, 21st-century communities. Thanks to this collaboration and projects like the one we're celebrating today, Canada will remain among the best places in the world to live, work and raise a family."
- Gudie Hutchings Member of Parliament for Long Range Mountains, on behalf of the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities

Once complete, the project will reduce health risks associated with asbestos and improve the reliability of Deer Lake's firefighting services. It will also support sustainability by making the water distribution system more efficient and reducing operation and maintenance costs.

The Government of Canada is contributing up to $1.07 million to this project, representing one-third of the estimated $3.2 million total eligible project cost. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will provide $1.65 million, and the remainder will be covered by the Town of Deer Lake.
