Remembering the Sacrifices of Men and Women in Uniform

Premier Ball to Lay Wreath at National Remembrance Day Ceremony

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will represent the people of the province and lay a wreath at the National War Memorial in Ottawa tomorrow (Friday, November 11). Premier Ball will attend the Remembrance Day ceremony to commemorate the centennial of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel and the historic sacrifices of Newfoundland and Labrador's men and women in uniform. He will be joined by Governor General David Johnston, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of Defence Kent Hehr and other dignitaries in laying wreaths and in viewing the march past of veterans.

"The Battle at Beaumont Hamel on July 1, 1916 was a tragic, yet defining moment in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador and I thank the Royal Canadian Legion for their efforts to ensure that more of our fellow Canadians are aware of the sacrifice and valour of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. On behalf of the people of our province, and especially our veterans, I greatly appreciate this honour and the opportunity to participate in this important ceremony."
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

Following the ceremony, the Premier and Minister Hehr will host the showing of the documentary, Trail of the Caribou at the National Arts Centre. The film, featuring Mark Critch and Allan Hawco, was produced by CBC St. John's and televised on July 1, 2016 - the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel. It is a powerful representation of the events of the Great War of 1914-18.

The event will feature speeches by the Premier and the Minister and a conversation between Mark Critch and Allan Hawco, who have generously donated their time to this event.

"I cannot thank Mark and Allan enough for their involvement in the documentary and the support and encouragement of this event. They are ambassadors for our province and through their work they are helping raise awareness of Newfoundland and Labrador's tremendous contribution in the First World War."
- Premier Ball

Support for the event and the showing of the film is part of the "Honour 100" program of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
