Premier Ball Congratulates Justice Malcolm Rowe for Historic Supreme Court Nomination
The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador is expressing his congratulations to Court of Appeal Justice Malcolm Rowe for his nomination to the Supreme Court of Canada. The nomination of Justice Rowe marks the first time in Canadian history that a Newfoundland and Labrador justice will serve on the country's highest court.
"This is a moment of great pride for all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. This historic nomination is
recognition of the quality of our judicial system and the extraordinary jurists who preside over our
courts. My congratulations go to Justice Rowe for his nomination, and I would also like to express my
appreciation for his 17 years of service to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal of Newfoundland and
Labrador. I have expressed my thanks to Prime Minister Trudeau and Justice Minister Wilson-Raybould for
their consideration of this eminent jurist as being worthy of the Supreme Court."
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
This is the first time since Newfoundland and Labrador joined Confederation in 1949 that a justice from the province will serve on the Supreme Court. The vacancy at the Court resulted from the retirement of Justice Thomas Cromwell of Nova Scotia.
The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General, is pleased with the news of the decision.
"I am elated that Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Wilson-Raybould have nominated Justice Rowe to this
extremely prestigious position with the highest court in the country. I have always maintained that this
Province is home to eminently qualified jurists worthy of a seat on the Supreme Court of Canada bench, and
it is with great pride that I congratulate Justice Rowe on this incredible accomplishment."
- The Honourable Andrew Parsons, Minister of Justice and Public Safety and Attorney General
The Supreme Court of Canada nomination of Justice Rowe comes after the establishment of a new, transparent process of application instituted this year by Prime Minister Trudeau and Justice Minister Wilson-Raybould.
