Engaging Municipalities for Stronger Communities
First Annual Premier’s Forum on Local Government Focused on Building Sustainable Municipalities
The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, hosted the inaugural Premier’s Forum on Local Government today in St. John’s. The forum featured discussion between community leaders and the Premier on issues of concern to their municipalities in their respective regions that they represented. The forum was held in conjunction with Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador and the Combined Councils of Labrador.
“This was a very productive and informative first Premier’s Forum on Local Government. Opening the dialogue between elected officials from all regions of the province demonstrated a positive way forward. We had a very frank and focused discussion on some of the major issues we face together.”
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
Topics discussed throughout the day between the Premier and elected delegates included:
- Municipal infrastructure;
- Municipal finances;
- Regional opportunities; and
- Municipal candidate interest.
The Premier’s Forum on Local Government was a commitment made by the Provincial Government as it aims to continue the growth and development of municipalities. Delegates at the forum included the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador board of directors, the President of the Combined Councils of Labrador and the 24 representatives elected by individual municipalities to participate in the forum on behalf of their regions.
“I would like to thank participants for their opinions expressed during the forum. We are fortunate to have the benefit of their experience and expertise. We will be following up and looking at all information gathered, and reporting back on the progress made with respect to the opportunities raised today.”
- The Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs
