Ms. Lewis recognized that improving her literacy skills was critical to reaching her goal of attending post-secondary education in the near future and securing long-term employment. She enrolled in the Adult Basic Education program in St. Johns, which she completed at the Discovery Centre in December 2015.

Created by Premiers in 2004, the award recognizes the important role that literacy plays in facilitating Canadians participation as full and active citizens in all areas of society. The award is presented to learners, educators, volunteers, community organizations (including non-governmental organizations), and businesses in each province and territory.

In todays global community, education is vital for success. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador recognizes that focusing on increasing literacy skills is essential for personal growth and will help the province fill available jobs for future generations. I am honoured to recognize Evelyn Lewis for her achievements.
