Celebrating Excellence and Fair Play in Provincial Sport

Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in CBS Come to a Close

The week-long Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games wrapped up this past weekend in Conception Bay South (CBS). The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development, attended the closing ceremonies on Saturday evening.

�I was pleased to participate in the closing ceremonies and awards presentations marking the end of the 2016 Newfoudland and Labrador Summer Games in CBS. Congratulations to all the athletes for engaging in fair and spirited competition, especially to all the individual and team award winners. Our province is home to many talented athletes and this year�s summer games provided a great opportunity for them to showcase their skill and sportsmanship.�

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games is the largest multi-sport event for youth in the province, and has been encouraging participation in sport and the pursuit of athletic excellence for 40 years. The Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in CBS was made possible through collaboration between the Provincial Government, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador, the CBS Games host committee and provincial sport organizations.

�Our government is committed to supporting sport participation and healthy living throughout our province. Congratulations to all the athletes who competed in this year�s summer games; you delivered inspiring performances creating excitement for participants and spectators alike over this week-long event. I also want to thank all the coaches, managers, parents and volunteers as well as the host organizing committee who together made this year�s games a resounding success.�

The 2016 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in CBS ended with the St. John�s/North and Mount Pearl/South regions tied for the highest overall medal count with a total of 78 medals each. St. John�s/North region had the highest number of gold medals at 44.

The Premier�s Cup, awarded to the region accumulating the highest number of points, was presented to the St. John�s/North team. Both the Sport Newfoundland and Labrador trophy, for the team showing the most improvement from one summer games to the next, and the Lieutenant Governor�s Award, celebrating sportsmanship and spirit, were presented to the host region, CBS.
