Honouring Our Veterans and Heritage

Premier Ball Launches New Veterans Motorcycle Licence Plates
A new motorcycle licence plate for military veterans was unveiled today by the Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. Premier Ball unveiled the new licence plate design at the Royal Canadian Legion War Memorial in Conception Bay South.
“This update to our veterans licence plate program responds directly to requests from the Legion to have the Royal Canadian Legion’s official ‘Red Poppy’ incorporated into the design of provincial motorcycle plates. This initiative continues other efforts this year to honour veterans for their valuable contributions. I look forward to continued partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion to ensure veterans in this province are always recognized, revered, and respected.”
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador
Premier Ball unveiled the new licence plate with Frank Sullivan, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion.
“The Royal Canadian Legion was proud to partner with the Provincial Government on this initiative, which was very important to many members of our organization. Featuring the ‘Red Poppy’ on motorcycle plates honours the veteran who owns the bike, and brings special attention to Newfoundland and Labrador’s military history in a year when we are observing the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Beaumont Hamel. I thank the Provincial Government for its commitment to this project, and to honouring those who have served in the military.”
- Frank Sullivan, President of the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Command, Royal Canadian Legion
Mr. Thomas Skelding, who served in the Canadian Army in the Royal Canadian Dragoons, and played a key role in getting new motorcycle plates created, was presented the first plate by Mr. Sullivan.
The Poppy and Remembrance Committee of the Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion officially granted the right to use the official “Red Poppy” logo last year for passenger vehicles. Once a plate was designed for regular vehicles, efforts moved to creating a plate design that could present the poppy on smaller motorcycle plates.
