Premier Provides Submission to Defence Policy Review
The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, has provided a submission to the Federal Governments Defence Policy Review.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador applauds the commitment of the Federal Government to work with provinces and territories and all stakeholders when crafting a new national defence policy. This collaborative Defence Policy Review is well positioned to support the development of an effective Canadian defence policy.
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs
The submission provides information from the Provincial Governments perspective that can be used to help inform the development of Canadas new defence policy. It takes into account existing Department of National Defence assets, operational protocols and mandates.
In summary, the primary interests of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador are:
- Securing an expanded operational mandate for 5 Wing Goose Bay and reinforcing the importance of 5 Wing to Canadas efforts to support partnerships with international allies as well as its value as a strategic location to facilitate Canadas interests in the Arctic; and
- Improving search and rescue capacity and enhancing operational protocols to strengthen marine and air search and rescue in the province.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians value military service and it is our governments hope that our provinces role and place in Canadas military will continue and be enhanced.
- Premier Ball
In addition to the submission, the Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation and MHA for Lake Melville, and Randy Edmunds, MHA for Torngat Mountains, participated in a Defence Policy Review consultation on July 25 in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and advocated for expanding the operational mandate for 5 Wing Goose Bay as well as improved search and rescue in the province.
