Supporting Energy Efficiency in Newfoundland and Labrador
Province Launches New Guide to Energy Efficiency for Large Buildings
The Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency today released a new guide for the construction industry on incorporating energy efficiency into the design and construction of large buildings. The Guide to Better Building Envelopes for Large Buildings - 2016 focuses on initiatives to make large buildings more energy efficient.
"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to helping building designers, contractors and owners incorporate energy efficiency into large buildings. Energy efficiency can save money for building operators and owners, which businesses can use to increase their competitiveness and grow their operations, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and tackling climate change."
- The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister Responsible for the Office of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency.
Increasing energy efficiency in buildings can have significant environmental and economic benefits. In 2014, buildings consumed approximately 22 per cent of all energy used, including fuel oils, electricity, wood and other fuels and were responsible for 14 per cent of total greenhouse gases emitted in the province.
Over 50 per cent of the energy in buildings is used for space heating, and research shows that improving a building's envelope (typically the outer walls, windows, doors and roofs) has a significant impact on the overall energy efficiency of buildings.
The guide complements in-person and online training that was recently delivered to more than 65 stakeholders, including engineers, architects, contractors and building product suppliers. It is available online at www.turnbackthetide.ca in the Publications section under Tools & Resources.
This work is part of the Provincial Government's strategic approach to tackling climate change and improving energy efficiency while helping diversify the economy.
