Building a Reliable and Safe Transportation Network

Provincial Government Invests in Road Work in Southern Labrador

The Provincial Government is moving forward with road work in the Southern Labrador area this construction season with a project for leveling/paving of Route 510 from L'Anse au Clair to West St. Modeste. The project is being funded under the $62 million Provincial Roads Program. The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, together with the Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Lisa Dempster, MHA for Cartwright - L'Anse au Clair, made the announcement in Labrador today.

"Our government believes a solid foundation in road infrastructure encourages people to travel, businesses to expand and communities to flourish. We are making significant investments in our transportation network this year through the Provincial Roads program. Such investments stimulate economic activity, create jobs and will help our communities and our province to thrive."
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

The tender for the road project from L'Anse au Clair to West St. Modeste will be issued this week.

"Route 510 is an important part of the transportation network in Labrador and we recognize the area from L'Anse au Clair to West St. Modeste is in need of work. With many demands throughout the province for road rehabilitation and upgrades, we are pleased to be able to undertake a leveling project in this area which will help improve driving and safety conditions for residents."
- The Honourable Al Hawkins, Minister of Transportation and Works

Dust suppression work is also being undertaken to enhance safe driving conditions. Roads in the following areas of the Labrador region will be treated this construction season: Lodge Bay; Mary's Harbour; St. Lewis; Port Hope Simpson; Charlottetown; Paradise River; and, Cartwright.

"Today's announcement is very good news for Cartwright - L'Anse au Clair. By including vital infrastructure upgrades for the region in its very first budget, government is demonstrating its strong commitment to the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in coastal Labrador."
- Lisa Dempster, MHA for Cartwright - L'Anse au Clair

The Department of Transportation and Works is developing a multi-year transportation infrastructure plan that will list projects for the next five years. The plan will allow tenders to be issued earlier to take better advantage of the full construction season, and will identify projects based on criteria such as safety, conditions, class, economic impacts, preventive value and bundling opportunities.
