Newfoundland and Labrador to Welcome Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal

July 1, 2016, marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel. Newfoundland and Labrador is honoured to host Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, to the province from June 28 to July 1, recognizing her official role in this historic commemoration.

"On behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, we are honoured to welcome The Princess Royal to the province. One hundred years ago, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians distinguished themselves in battle. At the time, we were a small dominion of the British Empire and our men answered the call, serving with the British expeditionary forces. The First World War was a defining moment in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador and continues to shape who we are today. The Princess Royal's presence is more special because she joins us to commemorate on the eve of one of the province's most significant anniversaries - July 1, 1916, the opening day of the Battle of the Somme at Beaumont-Hamel. We welcome Her Royal Highness and are pleased she is here to share in the incredible story of our ancestors courage, perseverance and pride."
- The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

From June 28 to July 1, The Princess Royal will visit St. John's and Corner Brook for a variety of Honour 100 scheduled events, including:

  • Unveiling of the Danger Tree at Memorial University Grenfell Campus;
  • Awarding of new colours for the Royal Newfoundland Regiment's 2nd Battalion; and
  • Royal Canadian Legion's annual Ceremony of Remembrance at the National War Memorial

A full itinerary of The Princess Royal's visit will be issued at a later date.

Members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Advisory Council help form the Honour 100 Steering Committee, which is the overseeing body responsible for Honour 100 - the province's commitment to First World War commemorations.

"As chair of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Advisory Council, and co-chair of the Honour 100 Steering Committee, we are very honoured that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, has chosen to be in Newfoundland and Labrador with her Regiment to commemorate this momentous occasion on the 100th anniversary of Beaumont-Hamel."
- Ron Penney, Chair of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Advisory Council and Co-Chair of the Honour 100 Steering Committee

The Honour 100 initiativerepresents the Provincial Government's commitment to commemorating Newfoundland and Labrador's First World War story. Honour 100 is reconnecting Newfoundlanders and Labradorians with their history and helping them remember the sacrifices made by honouring our veterans past and present.
