Minister Facilitates Discussion on Violence Prevention Initiative

The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women met with various stakeholder groups in Gander today to discuss the Provincial Government's Violence Prevention Initiative (VPI) and steps forward.

"Our government is fully committed to working in collaboration with community partners and stakeholders to prevent violence against women and other populations at risk. We are in the process of reaching out to stakeholders throughout the province who have partnered with the Violence Prevention Initiative to ask for input on enhancing the action plan. Today I was pleased to meet with groups in Gander who are working hard to reduce violence in their communities."

Minister Bennett facilitated a morning session on the Violence Prevention Initiative to allow stakeholders from various areas, including Gander, New-Wes-Valley, Central West, Burin Peninsula and Clarenville, to discuss actions and barriers to preventing violence in communities. The Minister also met with the executive of the Transition House Association, the Roads to End Violence group and the Gander Women's Centre.

By working in collaboration, together we will continue to build a province where all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can live, learn and work without the fear of violence."

To date VPI discussions have taken place in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Corner Brook and Gander, with plans for discussions in the eastern region of the province.
