Long-Term Planning with Decisive Actions

Provincial Government Releases Locations of Government Office Closures

Budget 2016 contained the first very difficult decisions the Provincial Government has made to address the unprecedented deficit. Today, the Provincial Government is outlining the locations of government office closures as a result of Budget 2016 decisions.

The choices we had to make were not easy and every Newfoundlander and Labradorian wherever they live and whatever services they use will have to be part of the solution. We committed to the people of the province to be open and transparent, and today we are continuing that commitment by releasing the locations of government offices that are closing as a result of the Provincial Budget. We respect our staff and did not want to disclose the location until all impacted employees were notified. That notification has now taken place. We also want to ensure that we do not place undue stress and worry on the public service.
- The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board

A number of Advanced Education and Skills, and Child, Youth and Family Services offices are closing. Details can be found in the backgrounder below.

In just over 120 days, the Government Renewal Initiative and line-by-line review has saved $243 million in 2016-17, annualizing to $251 million. Taking into account entities and accrual adjustments, the impact on the deficit is $282 million in this fiscal year.
