Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Receives Funding to Expand Labour Market Database
The Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation is receiving one year funding of $149,439 to enhance and improve its membership and labour force database. This is being made possible through the Labour Market Partnerships program under the Labour Market Development Agreement between the provincial and federal governments.
“Since its establishment in 2011, the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation Band continues to work for the benefit of its membership and establish the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation in its rightful place among the Aboriginal peoples of Newfoundland and Labrador. The funding announced today is an important labour market tool; one that will assist in gathering the information necessary to ensure members take advantage of all opportunities to secure employment and advance their careers in today’s challenging economy.”

The one-year project will include:
- Interface development – to increase the usability of the database system;
- Marketing – to promote the system as a labour market tool for Qalipu members; and
- Membership follow-up – to ensure members are comfortable using the database.

Working collaboratively, we will ensure programs and services meet their needs. This funding will assist the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation in expanding its labour database so individuals have access to up-to-date information to identify potential career opportunities. It will also help band members connect with employers.”

This labour force database will assist the Qalipu Mi’kmaq First Nation to gather and assess information about members such as work experience, education and training, to best link members to potential employment.

The Labour Market Partnership program is funded through the Labour Market Development Agreement with the Federal Government. The program is intended to support employers, employer or employee associations, community groups and communities in developing and implementing labour market strategies and activities for dealing with labour force adjustments, and in meeting human resource requirements.
