The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will be in Corner Brook tomorrow (Tuesday, March 1) to participate in the opening ceremonies of the 2016 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games. Premier Ball will be joined by the Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Seniors, Wellness and Social Development, the Honourable Gerry Byrne, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, and the Honourable Eddie Joyce, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister of Service NL.
The ceremonies begin at 7:00 p.m. at Corner Brooks Civic Centre, 1 Canada Games Place, with the parade of athletes. The evenings ceremonial finale will be the lighting of the cauldron at approximately 9:00 p.m.
The Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, involving athletes with an intellectual disability, are being held from March 1 to 5. It is the first time the event has been held in this province since Special Olympics Canada was established in 1969. More than 900 athletes, coaches and mission staff from throughout Canada are in Corner Brook vying for medals in seven winter sports: alpine skiing, cross country skiing, figure skating, speed skating, curling, floor hockey and snowshoeing. The results of these games will determine Team Canada members selected to compete in the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria.
