Minister Discusses Violence Prevention Issues during Roundtable
The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, led a roundtable discussion today with representatives from different organizations to discuss ways to stop violence against individuals. The session took place at the Hungry Heart Caf in St. Johns as part of Violence Prevention Month.
No one should ever be made to feel threatened or harassed and we all have a responsibility to reach out and take action against all forms of violence. Our government supports building safe, violence-free environments where no one feels threatened in their homes, communities, schools or workplaces. As a wife and mom to two young boys, I know the importance of talking about ways to end violence and instilling in our young people at an early age the importance of fairness, equality and respect to everyone. Violence Prevention Month offers a great opportunity to continue this conversation and foster education and understanding so we can all help stop violence and harassment.
- The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women
The Coalition Against Violence Avalon East has spearheaded a social media campaign this year called #OneIdeaNL. It challenges all residents to join the conversation on Twitter and Facebook and share their ideas on how to stop violence.
There are several forms of violence that need to be brought to the forefront. The #OneIdeaNL campaign aims to start the conversation on identifying ways to stop violence in our homes, workplaces and communities.
- Catherine Dwyer, Executive Director, Coalition Against Violence Avalon East
The Provincial Government is focused on achieving long-term solutions for those most at risk of violence by educating and creating awareness through campaigns such as Respect Women, the Prevention of Violence Against Older Persons, Purple Ribbon, and the Cybersafe Girl Initiative.
