Data Privacy Day: Protect Yourself Today
Today, on Data Privacy Day, the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement, is encouraging Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to think about what they can do to better protect themselves online.
Every day, most of us share our information online through social media, online banking, applying for jobs using online forms, and sending emails to our friends. We all are reminded to think about how we share information and make the best decisions to protect our privacy.
- The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement
The Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Office of the Office of Public Engagement has developed a tip sheet outlining steps Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can take to better protect their personal information. It is available at www.ope.gov.nl.ca.
Some of these tips include:
- Be cautious when posting online  anything you post online can last a lifetime;
- Avoid faxing sensitive information unless absolutely necessary;
- Use a complex password that is hard to guess;
- If you have children, keep your computer in a central location to monitor their online activities; and
- Review privacy settings on social networking sites to ensure that personal information is limited from public accessibility.
Data Privacy Day has been recognized in North America since 2008 and seeks to raise awareness about privacy and data protection.
