The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.
UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
CBPP Zone 3 Five-year Forestry Operating Plan (2017-2021) (Reg. 1853)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Ltd.
The proponent has submitted a proposal for a Five-year Operating Plan for Zone 3 consisting of Forest Management Districts 5 (Bonavista North Management District) and 6 (Glenwood Management District), occupying and area generally from central Newfoundland northeast between Gander and western Terra Nova National Park boundary and to the northeast coast known as the Road to the Shore. The plan describes timber harvesting operations, construction of access roads and silviculture activities. The plan covers the period from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2021.
The undertaking was registered on July 14, 2016; the deadline for public comments is August 18, 2016; and the minister's decision is due by August 28, 2016.
CBPP Zone 7 Five-year Forestry Operating Plan (2017-2021) (Reg. 1854)
Proponent: Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited.
The proponent has submitted a proposal for a Five-year Operating Plan for Zone 7 which includes Forest Management Districts 9 and 16 surrounding White Bay. Zone 7 extends from Deer Lake in the west to Cat Arm in the north and includes all of the Baie Verte Peninsula. The plan describes proposed timber harvesting operations, construction of access roads and silviculture activites. The plan covers the period from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2021.
The undertaking was registered on July 14, 2016; the deadline for public comments is August 18, 2016; and the minister's decision is due by August 28, 2016.
MINISTER'S DECISION EXTENDED:
Badger Area Quarry (Reg. 1841)
Proponent: KDJ Enterprises Ltd.
The Department of Environment and Conservation and the proponent have agreed to extend the deadline for the minister's decision to July 25, 2016.
Grand Falls Main Dam Rehabilitation (Reg. 1844)
Proponent: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro
The Department of Environment and Conservation and the proponent have agreed to extend the deadline for the minister's decision to July 28, 2016.
Commercial Spray Painting Booth in Donovans Industrial Park (Reg. 1845)
Proponent: Island Propane Limited (Newlab Oxygen Limited)
The Department of Environment and Conservation and the proponent have agreed to extend the deadline for the minister's decision to July 22, 2016.
Indian Brook Area Quarry Expansion and Equipment Storage Yard (Reg. 1846)
Proponent: J & J Paving Limited
The Department of Environment and Conservation and the proponent have agreed to extend the deadline for the minister's decision to July 28, 2016.
PROJECT RELEASED:
Valentine Lake Mineral Exploration and Access Roads (Reg. 1839)
Proponent: Marathon Gold Corporation
The project is released subject to the following conditions:
- Activities requiring vegetation clearing or excessive noise be undertaken outside of the nesting, breeding and brood rearing period for Newfoundland marten (i.e. early April to mid-July).
- A minimum 50 m naturally vegetated buffer be maintained along all waterbodies and wetlands to protect sensitive riparian and aquatic species, waterfowl and their habitat.
- A Decommissioning Strategy, approved by the Minister of Environment and Conservation, for the proposed access roads is required prior to the start of construction.
