Department Concludes 2016-17 Big Game Licence Draw

The annual big game licence draw for moose and caribou for the 2016-17 hunting season is now complete and notifications are being mailed to all applicants. Notices for successful applicants will be mailed first, followed by notices for unsuccessful applicants.

Resident hunters can obtain more information about their draw results and priority status by visiting www.wildlife.gov.nl.ca or by calling 709-637-2025 or 709-729-2630.

"Participation in responsible hunting is vital to the success of our wildlife management programs and to the long-term sustainability of our wildlife. As hunters head out this season, they are reminded to conduct all hunting activities safely, especially when handling firearms. Respecting wildlife and being mindful of the activities and interests of others will help ensure everyone can enjoy all the Newfoundland and Labrador wilderness has to offer."
- The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation

More than 74,350 big game hunting applications were submitted for this year's draw for an available 27,884 resident moose licences and 470 resident caribou licences.

There are four payment options available for successful applicants as outlined in the backgrounder below. Due to an unforeseen delay in mailing draw notices, the deadline for payments made by mail, telephone or in person at the Central Cashiers Office has been extended to July 8. Online payments must be received by July 29. Payments must be received by these deadlines to guarantee receipt of licences and tags before the start of the hunting season.

Successful applicants should also note that the HST increases from 13 to 15 per cent on July 1 and all payments received on or after that date will be subject to 15 per cent HST.

Individuals may also apply and pay for a black bear licence online at www.wildlife.gov.nl.ca. Payments for black bear licences are subject to the same deadlines and conditions as those for big game.
