Registration Open for Becoming an Outdoors Woman Spring Workshop

Women who want to learn more about outdoor skills and activities will have an opportunity to participate in a one-day session this spring at Salmonier Nature Park.

The Becoming an Outdoors Woman spring workshop will be offered on June 11 with skilled instructors teaching sessions that range from archery, trapshooting and fly casting to outdoor survival, trail running and wildlife sketching. The full list of topics is available in the attached backgrounder.

The workshop is ideal for women who have an interest in outdoor activities and want to learn from experienced instructors. All classes are taught at an introductory level. Participants can choose from eight subjects by signing up for one morning class and one afternoon class. The registration fee of $50 covers registration, lunch and all required equipment.

A more extensive, three-day version of the workshop is offered in the fall.

BACKGROUNDER
Session Descriptions For Becoming an Outdoors Woman Spring Workshop

Note: Participants will attend one session for the morning and one for the afternoon.

Morning:
Welcome Wildlife to your Backyard
Participants will learn the skills necessary to create a welcoming backyard for wildlife. In addition to learning about native plants, they will also use tools to construct bird feeders for their backyard.

Outdoor Survival
Participants will learn how to cope in a survival situation using whatever materials are on hand, learn to put together a basic survival kit, make an emergency shelter, signal for help and prevent hypothermia.

Shotgun/Trapshooting

This class will include a safety and handling session and an overview of shotgun types, ammunition and their uses. Participants will learn basic shooting techniques and how to judge distances and shoot at clay targets.

Fly Casting
In this class participants will learn about the equipment and clothing required to enjoy salmon fishing. They will learn good casting techniques, how to join lines and when to use different types of flies.

Afternoon:
Naturally Drawn
This is an introductory class where participants will be introduced to the techniques of observing and drawing from nature. Exercises will focus on various basic techniques that can be used to accurately record and meditate on nature using collected specimens or drawing outside.

Trail Running
During this session, participants will learn how to transition from road running or hiking to trail running. Proper gear, safety, and mind and body awareness will be outlined, followed by a relaxing guided run.

Bow/Archery
This class will cover the features of bows and arrows, and how to handle them accurately and safely. A range will be set up for participants to try out archery equipment.

Fishing Basics
In this class participants will learn to use a spinning reel, tie basic knots, cast and retrieve. They will prepare simple live bait with worms and artificial lures will be demonstrated.
