Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Wabush Mines Decommissioning & Rehabilitation                         (Reg. 1825)
Proponent: Cliffs Natural Resources

The Minister of Environment and Conservation following review of comments from the public, government agencies and Aboriginal groups is issuing a release with conditions, of the above undertaking from further environmental assessment review. This release is conditional on a number of requirements, all of which must be met before any work can commence on the site:

  • An Avian Monitoring Plan must be submitted to and approved by the Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Canada and Department of Environment and Conservation prior to start of the project.
  • A Gender Equity and Diversity Plan must be submitted to and approved by the Department of Natural Resources and the Women�s Policy Office prior to start of the project.
  • An Implementation Plan must be submitted to and approved by the Department of Natural Resources prior to start of the project.
  • An Employment Plan must be submitted to and approved by the Department of Advanced Education and Skills prior to start of the project.
  • A Public Consultation Plan must be submitted to and approved by the Department of Environment and Conservation prior to start of the project. This plan must describe consultation with the Town of Wabush, Aboriginal groups and include a detailed inspection schedule.

A detailed rehabilitation and closure plan as required by the Mining Act must be approved by the Department of Natural Resources prior to any activity taking place.

ENVIRONMENTAL PREVIEW REPORT GUIDELINES ISSUED:

Logy Bay Road NORM Temporary Storage Facility                         (Reg. 1802)

The minister has approved the guidelines for the preparation of the environmental preview report (EPR) for the Logy Bay Road NORM Temporary Storage Facility project. The EPR guidelines identify the information that the proponent will be required to include in the report.
