Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Placentia Bay Atlantic Salmon Aquaculture Project                         (Reg. 1834)
Proponent: Grieg NL Nurseries Ltd. and Grieg NL Seafarms Ltd.

The proponent is planning to construct and operate a land-based Recirculation Aquaculture System (RAS) Hatchery for Atlantic Salmon in the Marystown Marine Industrial Park and 11 marine-based farms in Placentia Bay. The proponent previously submitted the Marystown Atlantic Salmon Hatchery (Reg. 1814) for review which is now withdrawn. The land-based hatchery will produce up to seven million triploid smolt annually, which will be sold to salmonid aquaculture farms in the province and will be developed on approximately 10 hectares of serviced land. The 11 marine-based farms will be located in four Bay Management Areas (BMA): Rushoon BMA, Merasheen BMA, Red Island BMA and Long Harbour BMA. Each marine-based farm will consist of multiple cages with cage collars at the surface and nets extending down to 43 meters. The Bay Management Areas will occupy 1,958 hectares of which 24 hectares will be occupied by the sea cages. The project is scheduled to commence in April 2016.

The undertaking was registered on February 19, 2016; the deadline for public comments is March 26, 2016; and the minister�s decision is due by April 5, 2016.

Bishop�s Falls Cranberry Farm                                                         (Reg. 1835)
Proponent: Marks Berry Farm

The proponent has submitted a proposal to develop a new eight hectare cranberry farm near Bishop�s Falls off the Bay d�Espoir Highway. Year one of two will see a 0.7 kilometre access road off the Bay d�Espoir Highway, settling ponds constructed and four hectares of producing cranberry fields developed. The additional four hectares of cranberry fields will be developed in year two. Berry fields will be constructed using excavators, dozers, loaders, and dump trucks. Bog will be stripped to create level fields, settling ponds and ditches and sand spread evenly on the fields.

The undertaking was registered on February 18, 2016; the deadline for public comments is March 25, 2016; and the minister�s decision is due by April 3, 2016.
