Building Strong School Communities

Roncalli Elementary Celebrates Official Opening

The Roncalli Elementary school community joined together today to officially celebrate the opening of the redeveloped school.

“New modern learning environments invigorate students, encourage learning and bring together the communities that they serve. Our government is placing a clear focus on ensuring we provide quality education to students in all regions of the province. Today is an exciting day for the students, staff and school community of Roncalli Elementary. They bring this building to life and each day create new memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”
- The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

The extension and redevelopment of Roncalli Elementary was completed this past fall at a cost of more than $23 million. The extension includes a new cafeteria, gymnasium and 20 classrooms. The redevelopment included a reconfiguration of space to include four new classrooms, a multi-purpose/lunch room as well as a library resource centre. A former chapel at the front of the school was also replaced by a new administration wing. The school can accommodate approximately 700 students.

“As a school community, students, staff and volunteers of Roncalli Elementary are to be commended for their support and patience while construction upgrades and additions were made to their school. As the surrounding neighborhood has grown, so has the school community and it is exciting for everyone to celebrate the conclusion of this project. Roncalli Elementary will continue to be a wonderful place for children in the area to have a warm and welcoming atmosphere to learn, grow and develop.”
- The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board and MHA for Windsor Lake

Roncalli Elementary includes a number of key elements under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) including energy efficient and occupancy-based heating using ground source heat pump technology, energy efficient lighting and ventilation control, and water conservation. Students and staff will be able to monitor the school’s green initiatives through an interactive kiosk displaying the school’s environmental and energy efficiency.

“This redeveloped facility had been much anticipated by the entire school community and we are pleased to be celebrating this milestone with them today. Roncalli Elementary is certainly an example of how improved infrastructure can support our diverse curriculum, as we continue to hear wonderful stories of the many ways students are growing and learning in this educational space. The district looks forward to continuing to work with the Provincial Government to ensure future prosperity for our students and province.”
- Milton Peach, Chair, Newfoundland and Labrador English School District

The Provincial Government is committed to building an educational community that fosters safe, caring and inclusive learning environments for all children and youth.
