Holy Heart High School Student Named 2016 Lester B. Pearson Scholar
The latest provincial recipient of the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship is Dina Shehata, a Level II student at Holy Heart High School in St. Johns.
To become a Lester B. Pearson scholar a student must show excellence in academic achievement, dedication to their community and outstanding leadership qualities. I want to congratulate Dina Shehata for exemplifying these traits and being a positive role model for students across Newfoundland and Labrador. I hope her time at Pearson College enriches her life, helps her build her academic potential and opens doors to new opportunities.
- The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development
The Lester B. Pearson Scholarship is valued at $80,000 over two years for pre-university study at Pearson College, a United World College in Victoria, B.C. The Provincial Government contributes $68,000 to the scholarship, with the remainder provided through corporate and community sponsors.
I want to personally congratulate Dina on receiving the Lester B. Pearson Scholarship. Dinas dedication and commitment to achieve academic excellence is quite impressive, not only for herself, but also to her fellow students and as a role model for future students in our province. I encourage her to thoroughly enjoy the experience both academically and socially as she embraces the international learning forum and embarks on a path to her chosen career.
- The Honourable Cathy Bennett, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, and MHA for Windsor Lake
Pearson College was named in honour of the work done by the late Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson who initiated efforts to found a United World College along the Pacific coast. United World Colleges are a network of schools, colleges and programs spread across five continents that deliver a challenging and transformative educational experience to a diverse cross-section of students, inspiring them to create a more peaceful and sustainable future.
In September, Dina will attend Pearson College and join Kirsten Dalley, a former student of Exploits Valley High, who was awarded the scholarship last year.
