Recognizing Those Dedicated to Students

Proclamation Recognizes Canadian School Counselling Week

In recognition of Canadian School Counselling Week (February 1-5), the Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, joined representatives of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association to sign a proclamation acknowledging the important role school counsellors play in supporting student success.

“Guidance counsellors are pivotal in supporting a student’s overall success by nurturing their social, emotional, behavioural and academic development. I encourage school communities and the general public to join with me in recognizing the dedicated work undertaken by counsellors throughout our school system.”
- The Honourable Dale Kirby, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development

In Newfoundland and Labrador, guidance counsellors work in every school across the province. These professionals work daily with students to help them reach their full potential. Guidance counsellors support students in career development, facilitate individual and group counselling, and are essential when dealing with challenging times for school communities.

“As school counsellors, we are dedicated to providing students, families, and school communities with the primary supports that are essential to enhance academic performance, promote personal development, and attain optimum mental health. We are pleased to have this week recognized as we celebrate our profession and the comprehensive school counselling programs that are being offered in our schools.”
- Trent Langdon, Past-President (School Counsellors Chapter), Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association

The Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association is a national bilingual association of professionally trained counsellors. Members work in many diverse fields of education, employment and career development, social work, business, industry, mental health, public service agencies, government and private practice.
