The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change:

Provincial Government Congratulates Paradise Double Ice Complex on Achieving LEED Status

Mr. Speaker, I rise in this Honorable House today to congratulate the Town of Paradise on the Paradise Double Ice Complex achieving Silver certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Recognized in over 160 countries, LEED provides independent, third-party verification that a building has been built to high-performing standards for sustainability, and I was pleased to attend a celebration of the complex achieving LEED Silver Certification earlier this month with the proud mayor and council of the Town of Paradise, staff and residents.

Mr. Speaker, to date 15 projects have achieved some level of LEED certification in the province, eight of which have achieved LEED Silver. This is the first arena and sports facility to achieve this status in the Newfoundland and Labrador. LEED buildings are designed to be better places to live and work. They also save water and energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve indoor air quality, and conserve resources.

Mr. Speaker, the Paradise Complex has already seen 58 per cent savings in the cost of total energy, and over 36 per cent reduction in indoor water use. This means that the complex uses substantially less energy than equivalent buildings of the same size that were not constructed to LEED guidelines.

Congratulations once again to the Town of Paradise on your accomplishment. Attaining LEED Silver is a significant achievement and the town’s leadership in this important area has made the Paradise Double Ice Complex a dynamic and sustainable fixture in the community.

Thank you.
