Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Baie Verte Area, Stog�er Tight Goldmine - West Pit Expansion                                (Reg. 1860)
Proponent: Anaconda Mining Inc.

The proponent proposes to expand their West Pit site at the existing Stog�er Tight mine project by 0.395 hectares of land below the current water level of Fox Pond in order to mine a deeper portion of the ore resource. The water level of Fox Pond would be temporarily lowered from 114 to 111 metres above sea level elevation and kept at this level until mining is completed, at which point this area would be flooded and water levels will climb back to natural levels. The mineable ore reserve/resource totals approximately 140,000 tonnes (33,000 tonnes approved with the previous application). The deposit will be mined over an eight to ten month period commencing in winter/spring of 2017/2018 and ore will be processed at the Pine Cove Mill facility already in operation.

The undertaking was registered on September 15, 2016; the deadline for public comments is October 21, 2016; and the minister�s decision is due October 28, 2016.

Stephenville Septage Treatment Facility                                (Reg. 1861)
Proponent: Enviro Green Septic Pumping Ltd.

The proponent proposes to construct a septage waste treatment facility within the Town of Stephenville and adjacent to the existing sewer treatment facility. The proposed facility will consist of a septage receiving station, sludge treatment beds and conventional effluent disposal field. The facility will be used to treat septic waste from the Stephenville and west to Cape St. George area. The facility will take 4 to 6 months to be completed and is proposed to be operational by summer 2017.

The undertaking was registered on September 15, 2016; the deadline for public comments is October 21, 2016; and the minister�s decision is due by October 30, 2016.

APPEAL DECISION:

Lower Churchill Hydroelectric Generation Project            (Reg. 1305)
Proponent: Nalcor Energy Seafarms Ltd.

On August 12, 2016 the Nunatsiavut Government submitted an appeal on the decision to approve the Human Health Risk Assessment Plan (HHRAP). The appeal has been reviewed in accordance with Section .107 of the Environmental Protection Act. On September 11, 2016 the Nunatsiavut Government were notified the original decision to accept the HHRAP has been upheld.
