Supporting Sustainable Resource Management

Big Game Hunting Season Starts Saturday in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, today reminded residents and visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador that the general seasons for big game hunting in the central and western management zones of the island and Labrador open on Saturday, September 10. General seasons for the eastern region big game zones will open on October 1.

"Safe and responsible hunting and trapping practices play an important role in the management and conservation of wildlife and we appreciate the support of those who do their part. Our government is committed to ensuring healthy wildlife populations and we will continue to advance programs and services that allow us to better understand and support sustainable wildlife management."
- The Honourable Perry Trimper, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

The public is reminded that this is the second year that moose hunting seasons will continue in two moose reduction management areas on the island portion of the province which are adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway in central and eastern areas; Moose Reduction Zone 101 Central opened on August 27 and Moose Reduction Zone 100 Eastern will open on September 17. Established in 2015, the Moose Reduction Zone project has been designed to measure the effectiveness of harvesting moose near the highway and its potential in reducing moose related vehicle collisions. All hunters are reminded that all existing traffic and hunter safety laws must be observed within these zones and all other areas throughout the season.

Also as a reminder, new hunters interested in the provincial resident big game licence draw for 2017 must complete the Canadian Firearms Safety/Hunter Education Course on or before November 30, 2016, to meet eligibility requirements. For further information on hunter safety, licensing, education, training and workshops in the province, contact the Department of Environment and Climate Change at 709-637-2025 or visit www.env.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/education/index.html
