Provincial Government Recognizes National Social Work Month

National Social Work Month, which is observed during the month of March each year, celebrates the significant impact social workers have in communities across the country. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the Provincial Government is recognizing over 1,500 registered social workers currently practicing throughout the province.

“Today marks the beginning of National Social Work Month, and I would like to sincerely thank social workers in our province for their ongoing commitment and dedication. Each and every day, they make a positive difference in the lives of children, families and seniors.”
- The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services

The theme for National Social Work Month 2016 is Social Work: A Profession of Choice. This theme highlights the diversity of the social work profession, as well as the valuable role social workers play in society.

“I am so pleased to recognize the importance of social workers. I appreciate their ongoing work to support the health and social well-being of the population.”
- The Honourable John Haggie, Minister of Health and Community Services

Registered social workers practise in a diverse range of settings in all regions of the province including healthcare, senior care, foster care, adult and youth corrections, child protection, adoptions, child care, addictions, mental health, community-based centres, government departments and universities, along with private practices and consulting services.

During the month of March, the province’s social workers will have the opportunity to participate in various networking and professional development sessions that help to promote and celebrate the profession of social work.
