Minister Gambin-Walsh Announces 2016 NLHC Scholarship Recipients

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) has awarded its 2016 Scholarship awards to tenants currently pursuing post-secondary studies. Each scholarship is valued at $1,000.

Education plays a vital role in the future success of Newfoundland and Labrador, and these scholarships are an example of our government's support for students throughout the province. I offer my sincere congratulations to each of the winners, and I wish them all the best in their future studies."

The following are the 2016 NLHC Scholarship recipients:

Youth Scholarship winners:

  • Alicia Hawco, Bell Island, is a graduate of St. Michael's Regional High attending Memorial University
  • Troy Pfinder, Grand Falls-Windsor, is a graduate of Exploits Valley High attending College of the North Atlantic
  • Brandon Bath, Glenwood, is a graduate of Lakewood Academy attending College of the North Atlantic
  • Abby Park, Corner Brook, is a graduate of Corner Brook Regional High attending Memorial University.

Adult Scholarship winners:

  • Karen Jones, St. John's, is currently attending Memorial University
  • Ashley Drover, Sunnyside, is currently attending College of the North Atlantic
  • DJ Williams, Stephenville, is currently attending College of the North Atlantic
  • Marie Christine Nassuna, St. John's, is currently attending Memorial University
  • Deborah Simmons, Grand Falls-Windsor, is currently attending Keyin College
  • Stacey Green, Stephenville, is currently attending Keyin College

QUICK FACTS:

  • Since 1987, NLHC has awarded 288 scholarships throughout the province to support adult tenants and tenants' children pursuing a post-secondary education.
  • Youth Scholarships are awarded based on the results of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development's scholarship score, which is derived from a student's performance on public exams.
  • Adult Scholarships are awarded based on reviews that assess need, initiative and community involvement.
