Minister Gambin-Walsh Recognizes National Housing Day

The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation, is recognizing November 22 as National Housing Day. This day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of affordable housing in communities nation-wide.

"We believe everyone has the right to access safe, affordable housing and agree Housing First is the best practice to end homelessness. The development of a provincial housing strategy is a key priority for our government and will be a focus in 2017."
- The Honourable Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation

The Provincial Government is currently working with federal, provincial and territorial colleagues to advance the development of a National Housing Strategy for Canada through a multi-lateral framework to be developed in 2017. The provincial housing strategy and the National Housing Strategy will complement and support each other.

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation issued an Invitation for Proposals, recently allocating $5.7 million to develop new affordable rental housing for seniors throughout the province.

This initiative is funded through a $48.9 million federal, provincial Social Infrastructure Fund Agreement which doubles the current Investment in Affordable Housing Program funding over the next two years. The program supports affordable housing for seniors, victims of family violence and addresses repairs and renovation of existing social housing.

The Provincial Government is committed to improving the affordability and availability of housing options for those most at risk for homelessness. It will continue to work in partnership with all levels of government and community to find the best possible solutions to address this issue.
