Community Infrastructure Enhancements for the Burin Peninsula

Governments Invest Almost $200,000 to Support Projects in Five Communities

The Honourable Judy Foote, Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Member of Parliament for Bonavista-Burin-Trinity, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), today announced more than $131,000 from the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150) for five projects on the Burin Peninsula, while the Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development, announced more than $53,000 towards two of these projects.

The Town of Lord’s Cove is receiving $42,590 from CIP 150 and $26,700 from the Provincial Government, through the Regional Development Fund, to upgrade and improve the Sandy Cove Trail, an existing trail and historical path in the community.

The Grande Meadows Golf Course will renovate the interior of its clubhouse, including improvements to the bathrooms and the installation of insulation and a heating and cooling system, as well as resurface and reseed portions of its course, thanks to an investment of $38,900 from the CIP 150 program.

The Southern Hill Trail Association will receive an investment from CIP 150 for $27,250 and an additional $27,000 from the Provincial Government, also through the Regional Development Fund, to extend the Burin Peninsula ATV Trailway by 12 kilometres to connect the community of Terrenceville with other sections of an existing trail system that runs parallel to Route 210 on the Burin Peninsula.

The Fortune Lions Club will use $11,850 in funding from CIP 150 to replace the roof on its building. The Lions Club Building is a key piece of infrastructure, serving as the only community building in the Town of Fortune and the centre of operations and fundraising activities for the local Lions Club.

The Northwest Arm Rod and Gun Club is adapting part of its current range for use as a sporting clay range, thanks in part to a CIP 150 investment of $10,589. The project will involve clearance of pathways, construction of shooting stations for target throwers and structures to provide security and water protection for the equipment.

CIP 150 is providing up to $300 million nationally over two years to support projects to rehabilitate, renovate and expand community and recreational infrastructure as part of the Government of Canada’s activities to honour Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation. The program is delivered in Newfoundland and Labrador by ACOA.
