Supporting Our Growing Film Industry

Frontier Television Series Debuts on Discovery Canada

Frontier, a Canadian-American historical drama television series chronicling the North American fur trade of the 1700s, made its debut last night (Sunday, November 6) on Discovery Canada. Frontier is a Newfoundland and Labrador/Ontario co-production. The series was created by Rob and Peter Blackie and produced by Take the Shot Productions which also produced Republic of Doyle. The show was largely shot in Newfoundland and Labrador and has already been renewed for a second season by Discovery Canada and Netflix‎.

“Newfoundland and Labrador’s film industry is home to some of the most talented actors, directors and producers. Followed by the success of the hit CBC series Republic of Doyle, I commend the Take the Shot team for their incredible work with Frontier. This series is a gripping tale of the struggle and intrigue around the late 18th century fur trade – one that is sure to please its viewers. As a government, we are proud to support this exciting project and the professional individuals associated with its production. I wish all those involved the very best for a successful debut season and look forward to what season two has to offer.”
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

The Provincial Government, through the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation (NLFDC), committed $2,375,000 in equity investment to the first season of Frontier.

The series stars Jason Mamoa, who played Drago in Game of Thrones and Aquaman in Batman v Superman. Brad Peyton, Newfoundland and Labrador born director of the hit feature film San Andreas, directed several episodes and is an executive producer. Frontier will be available on Netflix in Canada in 2018 and more information can be found at: www.discovery.ca/extra/frontier external link

Since the creation of the NLFDC as a crown corporation in 1997, more than $335 million in total production activity has occurred in the province. Of that, more than $260 million has been new, industry specific investments leveraged into the province.
