Building a Stronger Economy

Funding Support Provided for Regional Development and Planning Initiatives

The Provincial Government continues to strengthen not-for-profit organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador by providing them with non-repayable contributions and the necessary skills and tools for economic development through its Community Capacity Building Program.

"The Provincial Government is committed to building a stronger, more diverse economy in Newfoundland and Labrador. The Community Capacity Building Program assists groups and organizations province-wide by enhancing skills that are essential to regional economic planning, development and implementation. This program has seen much success. As a government, we will continue to work with local stakeholders to help grow the local economy in rural and urban environments."
- The Honourable Christopher Mitchelmore, Minister of Business, Tourism, Culture and Rural Development

An important tool in the economic development toolkit, the Community Capacity Building Program is a catalyst for economic development and enables community-based organizations to assume the role of partners in regional initiatives. The program provides non-repayable contributions of up to $5,000 to regional organizations and $10,000 to provincial organizations.

Since January, the Community Capacity Building Program has provided approximately $98,000 to support training and planning sessions for 25 not-for-profit organizations to advance organizational and business development priorities.

"Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site has been important for the economic development of this region. The Capacity Building Program's Opportunity Management Session was an asset for us as we prepared for UNESCO designation. The session helped us strengthen our existing partnerships and led us through a prioritization process which determined where our economic development efforts should be focused."
- Gertie Molloy, Chair, Cape Race – Portugal Cove South Heritage Inc.

Professionals with experience in economic development work with staff, volunteers and members of not-for-profit organizations to enhance essential skills in areas such as strategic economic planning, opportunity management, and governance. The facilitated sessions bring people together to collaborate on the development and enhancement of organizations in their communities and the surrounding regions.

A list of groups and organizations receiving funding can be found in the backgrounder below.
